Okay here's the long and short of it ... I'm a bit of a nervous traveler, but when your adorable husband surprises his family with a trip to Mexico, you go! Now, those who share this phobia, you probably have some tips on how to minimize those anxious moments and for me, pre-flight libations usually help ... so there you go. Fast forward to the morning after, I needed some fresh air, a view of the gorgeous ocean and yes, a cure-all to aid my perhaps "not so good idea" of indulgence. On my a.m. venturing, I met a kind and gentle soul who noticed my current state and escorted me to a cozy oversized club chair with the perfect viewing spot to take in all the beauty of the mosaic colors reflecting from the Pacific Ocean.
Jorge, pictured below, knew exactly what I needed and created the perfect offering, he called it, “The Mexican Standoff.” Three savory shots; Reposado tequila, house-made Sangrita, followed by an ice-cold lager. I am here to tell you, it was delicious and did the trick. Big and bright, bold and cold, it quickly became my a.m., my afternoon and pre-dinner amuse for the duration of that trip and beyond.
Jorge shared many traditions with me during that trip, but he highlighted this particular cultural tradition because it's their hospitality offering to everyone they are blessed to meet. A custom that they live out in their homes as well. That warmed my heart and I felt his spirit and truly enjoyed this delicious treat. Respectfully I say to Jorge, “I would love to share this tradition back home but need to honor you and the story, gracefully he said, "absolutely! tequila is a gift from Mexico that should be shared with the world.”
In 2014, I renamed The Mexican Standoff to, “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly…G.B.U" for short.
